Jan Ullrich the last

Jan Ullrich the last

The 17th and final Jan-Ullrich-Tour was another beauty. From Lahr to the  Kinzig Valley, then over the top of the Kniebis. Crossing the "Westweg" (a trail from Pforzheim to Basel, but not the one we did in tour # 13). Up the Löcherberg (literaly called mountain with holes, but there were none, so we had ...

Jan Ullrich Tour #13 Black Forest Crossing

Jan Ullrich Tour #13 Black Forest Crossing

Shorter than the previous weekend, but Tour number 13 still offered over 300 Kilometers of riding while crossing the Black Forest from North to South. Spread again over two days, with one notable exception - the end of day one (and beginning of day two) was in Hinterzarten, so I could sleep in my own bed... Morning in Hinterzarten A great way ...

Jan Ullrich Tour #12 - Lake Constance & Danube

Jan Ullrich Tour #12 - Lake Constance & Danube

Tour Number 12 is the longest, with 387 Kilometers and 4000 Meter of denivelation. Actually, due to construction and counting the 40km roundtrip to and from the start in Kirchzarten, it was actually 440km and almost 5000m of climbing. But fun nonetheless. Very beautiful area! A detour for nostalgia?  did like the "Trip down Memory Lane" b...

Jan Ullrich Book Tour Number 14

Jan Ullrich Book Tour Number 14

Jan Ullrich Tour Number 14 is a little unusual in the sense that it is out of sequence. Should have been #12 instead. Also, I didn't start where it said to start in the book. If you want to know why these things happened, just check out the report. Countryside as amazing as in the other tours Motor Bikes were outnumbering cyclists today - and they ...

Jan-Ullrich Tour #11 - Border Crossings

The 11th tour of the Jan-Ullrich-series temporarily leaves not only the Black Forest but also Germany, going into Switzerland and passing the Rheinfälle near Schaffhausen, with its spectacular waterfalls. Thanks to a Detour, the track was more than 10 miles longer and morte than 150 feet of climbing more than expected - but even the detour route wa...

Jan Ullrich Tour #10 - Up and Down

Jan Ullrich Tour #10 - Up and Down

Once again, scenery from the finest in Jan Ullrich Tour number ten - but it was also tough. Fortunately not as hot as last weekend, I was able to comfortably - but slowly - finish this ride. Even the dreaded Stohren turned out to be ok for my 39x28. But likely one of the slowest road rides I have ever done. Zut d'alors 3000 meters of climbing ...

Jan Ullrich Tour Number Six - Reconn

Jan Ullrich Tour Number Six - Reconn

A good planning  is half the tour - so my first try for Jan Ullrich Number Six is more like a whole tour. The planning was way off, the smartphone only half charged and the track missing on the Garmin. This naturally lead me to taking a wrong turn halfway around the loop, going back to the parking lot where I had already been a couple of ...

Jan Ullrich - the Amusement Park Tour

Jan Ullrich - the Amusement Park Tour

A really cool Amusement Park Tour - Number four in the Jan Ullrich series. Quiet start at the still empty pre-season park, then lots of nice roads to climb. The weather was picture perfect and I got to ride a few sections I didn't know. Nice. Die fastest guys take about ten minutes from Ettenheimünster up to the Streitberg Jan Ullrich, 20...

The Wildgutach-Linach - Jan Ullrich Tour 3

The third tour of my Jan-Ullrich-project leads me to Wildgutach and Linachtal, which are among my favorite rides anyway. I usually opt for a loop, today I climb up and go back down the Simonswald Valley.  The weather is picture-perfect, so I enjoy a sunny day, - it is even warmer trhan expected and the snow on the side of the road only ad...

Close but no cigars

Close but no cigars

Meant to start my llittle Jan Ullrich project already in September, but for various reasons I didn't get started until this weekend. The weather was ok even though very windy and a bit cold with all the descents.  To make a long story short, it was a classic DNF, even though I rode 20km more than the proposed route. But the deal...

New Years Resolution

New Years Resolution

well, like in any other year, I did not have one (or two or three...). Why bother with a resolution for an entire year when you know that come February all enthusiasm is gone? But my nephew made me aware of the World Press Cycling Championships (WPCC) in July, which will take place in Germany. They are held at the Nürburgring, which is car rac...

Show speed in Video

Unfortunately, it is not that easy to show the speed in a video. One way to do it is to use RaceRender. The simplest way is to use the gpx data from the videocam, if you cam has such a feature. In this case, I am using a GoPro Hero 9, which offers this. But it is not as accurate. A second way of doing this is to extract the gpx data from a gps sdev...

Oversized Cyclists

Oversized Cyclists

One of the reasons I am interested in profession road cycling is doubtlessly due to an article I read in the early 90s about Team Stuttgart, the predecessor of Team Telekom ()most famous rider was Jan Ullrich). The most fascinating part wasn't about the relentless training sessions or the lovely race reports. It was the paragraph about how much foo...
